The United States does not expect to carry out further military action in Venezuela following the arrest of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, according to a Republican senator briefed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senator Mike Lee said Mr Rubio told him the operation was limited to enforcing an arrest warrant and that no additional action was planned now that Mr Maduro is in US custody. The Venezuelan leader is expected to face criminal charges in the United States.<\/p>

US forces carried out overnight air and missile strikes in Caracas during the operation, targeting areas near key strategic sites, including the La Carlota air base and locations close to the presidential palace. Residents reported explosions, low-flying aircraft and smoke across parts of the capital.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The US administration has described the strikes as a narrowly focused mission linked directly to the arrest, rather than the start of a wider military campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Senator Lee has questioned the constitutional basis for the action, saying he was seeking clarity on how it could be justified without a formal declaration of war or authorisation for the use of military force.<\/p>

The arrest marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Caracas and is an unprecedented move against a sitting head of state. US authorities have long accused Mr Maduro of narcotics trafficking, corruption and human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US officials have not said when or where Mr Maduro will stand trial, or whether other Venezuelan officials could face arrest, as regional governments continue to monitor developments closely.<\/p>
