Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne will join the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, in launching an international concert on plastic pollution in June.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Browne and Espinosa will appear at a news conference on April 30 to launch the \u201cPlay It Out\u201d concert to be held in Antigua on June 1.<\/p>\n

Grammy Award singer, Ashanti, will also be present to help announce the concert.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

They will be joined Mona Juul, the Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations and Walton Webson, the Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The UN said that both Norway and Antigua and Barbuda governments are major supporters and global advocates of the campaign to tackle plastic pollution.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month in a message posted on his official Facebook page, Prime Minister Browne said his administration had introduced legislation to ban single-use plastic bags in 2016, making it the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to do so.<\/p>

\u201cThe island nation soon followed this measure with additional bans on plastic utensils and styrofoam.<\/p>\n

Antigua and Barbuda is so serious about its stance on single-use plastics that in 2018, national health authorities mulled over penalties for individuals caught importing, selling, or distributing banned plastics and styrofoam disposables.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIn 2019, the government of Antigua introduced a bill to the federal legislature that includes steeper fines for residents caught importing the banned items. Antigua has also made a greater push to educate citizens about how to reduce waste. Since their ban started, many other countries, including Chile and Colombia, have followed.\u201d Browne wrote.<\/p>
