Trinidad PM Tells Antigua\u2019s Browne to Explain U.S. Visa Restrictions, Accuses CARICOM of Backing Maduro<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar<\/a><\/strong> on Saturday told Antigua and Barbuda <\/a>Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/strong> <\/a>to focus on explaining to his citizens why their U.S. visas <\/a>were restricted, as she sharply criticized the Caribbean Community<\/strong> <\/a>for what she described as alignment with Venezuela\u2019s government.<\/p>

In a statement posted on social media, Persad-Bissessar said Browne and Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s ambassador to Washington, Ronald Sanders<\/strong>, should \u201cworry less about my comments<\/a>\u201d and instead address the reasons behind the U.S. decision to impose partial entry restrictions affecting Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Her remarks formed part of a broader attack on CARICOM\u2019s<\/a> stance toward Venezuela, which she said amounted to support for dictatorship and drug trafficking under the bloc\u2019s \u201czone of peace\u201d policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrinidad and Tobago wants no part of that alignment,\u201d Persad-Bissessar said, accusing CARICOM of aligning itself with Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong>, whom she alleged has imprisoned or killed thousands of political opponents.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She argued that the \u201czone of peace\u201d narrative is a fa\u00e7ade designed to push the American military out of the Caribbean region, thereby enabling Maduro to remain in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persad-Bissessar also cited long-standing territorial tensions between Venezuela and Guyana<\/strong>, saying Caracas has threatened to invade Guyana for years and has recently made statements implying that Trinidad and Tobago<\/strong> is part of Venezuela.<\/p>

Despite those threats, she said, CARICOM has chosen to support the Maduro government rather than confront what she described as regional security risks.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy priority is in the best interests of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago,\u201d Persad-Bissessar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CARICOM has not issued an immediate response to the statement. The bloc has traditionally promoted the Caribbean as a \u201czone of peace,\u201d emphasizing dialogue and non-intervention as guiding principles of regional diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persad-Bissessar\u2019s comments are expected to heighten tensions within CARICOM at a time when relations with the United States and concerns over regional security remain under strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
