Opposition MP Algernon \u201cSerpent\u201d Watts has criticised the 2026 allocation for the Ministry of Agriculture, telling Parliament the budget leaves almost no funding to carry out the programmes the government has announced.<\/p>

Speaking during the Budget Debate, Watts said that while the ministry received an $8 million increase over last year, the additional funds do not translate into meaningful support for food production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to the Estimates, he said that \u201c90% of that money\u2026 is personal emolument. Salaries, wages, and allowance,\u201d leaving \u201cvery little\u201d for the ministry\u2019s planned initiatives.<\/p>

Watts argued that the high share of recurrent spending undermines the government\u2019s stated commitments to food security and agricultural expansion. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAgriculture still receives one of the lowest budget shares of all the major ministries,\u201d he said, describing the allocation as \u201csimply a payroll budget, not a food security budget\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also challenged statements in the Budget that agriculture would play a central role in reducing the country\u2019s import bill, calling the promises unsupported by the figures presented. <\/p>

\u201cThat is just talk,\u201d Watts said. \u201cYou have shown us nothing\u2026 absolutely nothing\u201d to demonstrate progress toward those goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts said the ministry\u2019s operating structure leaves little capacity to fund the programmes the minister listed, asking how the initiatives would be executed with almost no discretionary spending.<\/p>
