PM Says UWI Five Islands Will Become \u2018Easily the Best in the Caribbean\u2019 as Government Plans $200M Expansion<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus is on track to become \u201ceasily the best in the Caribbean,\u201d announcing a $200 million expansion set to begin next year.<\/p>

Speaking at Tuesday\u2019s VC Bird Day ceremony, Browne said the government will undertake a major build-out of the campus to position Antigua and Barbuda as a regional leader in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told the audience, \u201cWe want to make sure that we have a campus that [is] easily the best in the Caribbean, that will continue to provide opportunities for the advancement of our people.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

Browne framed the project as part of a broader national commitment to educational transformation, calling learning \u201can engine of growth\u201d essential to pushing the country forward.<\/p>

\u201cEducation, as you’re aware, is one of the pillars of our development, one of the engines of growth and development, and we will continue to advance all aspects of our education,\u201d<\/strong> he said.
He added that the government intends for the expanded campus to prepare citizens for global competitiveness, stating, \u201cWe want to make sure that our people can stand toe to toe, shoulder to shoulder with anyone globally. We want to make sure that you can compete with the best in the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister announced that \u201ccommencing next year, we will spend $200 million to expand the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus,\u201d<\/strong> describing the investment as central to Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s long-term development.<\/p>

He said the expansion is designed to secure greater access to tertiary education and strengthen the country\u2019s human-capital base, noting that the government will \u201ccontinue to invest so heavily in education\u201d as part of its nation-building agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement follows repeated calls by Browne for Antigua and Barbuda to harness education as a strategic pillar for economic growth, innovation and social mobility.<\/p>
