The Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown\u00a0(RCAS)<\/em>\u00a0in collaboration with the Swiss Embassy has donated thirty-two\u00a0(32)<\/em>\u00a0water fountains to eighteen\u00a0(18)<\/em>\u00a0primary and secondary schools across the island.<\/p>

This project comes at a cost of more than $165,000 XCD which was funded by the Swiss Embassy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown, keeping in harmony with Rotary International areas of focus, believes that access to clean water is a basic human right,\u201d said Jonah Ormond, RCAS President. \u201cThrough consultation with the Ministry of Education and public schools across the nation it was established that access to water throughout the school hours was of paramount importance as the absence of water catchment systems resulted in the shortening of daily schedules to relieve students and staff of the unfavorable conditions. For this reason, a partnership was established between the Rotary Club of Antigua Sundown and the Swiss Embassy in 2015 where we were able to provide water pumps and storage tanks for 4 schools \u2013 Freemans Village, Sea View Farm, Freetown and Bethesda – Building on a previous club project in 2009\/2010 where we installed pumps and storage tanks at three schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continued Ormond; \u201cIn 2017, we again partnered with the Embassy to provide a total of 32 fountains to be installed at 18 schools at a cost of over $165,000.00 XCD. This project is expected to impact over 8,300 students along with the teachers and staff of these institutions. Our club firmly believes that each school should have access to clean drinking water to facilitate an environment conducive to learning\u00a0for the students and teachers alike. We are happy to have partners like the Swiss Embassy and are thankful for the support we\u2019ve received from Ambassador Urs R. Schnider and Swiss Counsel to Antigua & Barbuda Patricia Gyger.\u201d<\/p>\n

A number of schools have already been outfitted with water fountains to include the T.N. Kirnon Primary and the Antigua Grammar schools. The remaining installations\u00a0are expected to be completed over the Easter break.<\/p>

\u201cCaribbean Water Treatment who has been a steadfast partner throughout this entire initiative since it began in 2009 has agreed to come on board to provide a year supply of filter and maintenance services,\u201d said Ormond. “We can\u2019t thank them enough for their support.\u201d<\/p>\n
