Preliminary HIV <\/a>statistics for 2024 point to low treatment<\/a> uptake and persistent stigma, according to AIDS Programme Manager Delcora Williams.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Williams said early data indicate about 1,500 accumulated HIV cases in Antigua and Barbuda,<\/a> with more than 400 deaths. Roughly 600 people are currently in care, leaving an estimated 1,015 individuals <\/a>living with HIV who are not accessing treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor us as a national program, this is not a good picture,\u201d she said, noting that only about half of those who test positive are receiving care.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Williams urged anyone who tests positive to begin treatment immediately, adding that viral suppression keeps people healthy and prevents transmission. \u201cIf you are virally suppressed, you cannot transmit HIV to your partner,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She acknowledged that stigma remains a major barrier, discouraging people from testing or entering care. \u201cPeople must know they have the right to access treatment,\u201d she said.<\/p>

Several events are planned this week ahead of World AIDS Day, including pop-up education sessions, a teen workshop, outreach to Spanish-speaking residents, and a national call to \u201cpaint the place red\u201d on December 1 to show support for people living with HIV.<\/p>
