Antigua and Barbuda <\/a>is now producing more than 11 million gallons of desalinated water<\/a> each day, the highest output in its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement came Thursday during the Throne Speech, where Governor General Sir Rodney Williams<\/a> detailed the country\u2019s progress in tackling decades-old shortages<\/a>.<\/p>

Sir Rodney said water production has risen sharply from 3.5 million gallons per day<\/a> in 2014 to the current 11 million, crediting the Antigua Public Utilities Authority <\/a>and a U.S. partner firm for expanding desalination capacity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described the increase as a major step toward ending the chronic supply problems that have challenged households, farmers and the tourism sector for generations.<\/p>

Work, however, is not complete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storage upgrades are still underway, with Cuban water engineers assisting through a bilateral arrangement to address longstanding deficiencies in the island\u2019s tank system. Repiping across several communities is also planned, with support pledged by the Government of China.<\/p>

The Governor General said these combined efforts\u2014new production, expanded storage, and systemwide repiping\u2014represent the closest Antigua and Barbuda has ever come to resolving its historic water woes. <\/p>

He praised APUA\u2019s leadership and Cabinet direction, saying the gains reflect \u201ctalent, friendship across many nations, and unwavering determination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional upgrades are expected to continue into 2026 as the government moves to modernize the entire water network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
