Debate erupted on social media after it was revealed that inmates were among the 432 students <\/a>who recently completed short courses at the campus. <\/a><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Some commenters argued that certain offenders should be barred <\/a>from classes, but Lee said the issue must be viewed through legal, emotional and academic lenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s the legal, the emotional, and the academic,\u201d she said, noting that imprisonment itself is the punishment. \u201cWe must never forget that families grieve, but these residents of the prison\u2026 their freedom has been restricted. That\u2019s the punishment.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She acknowledged the pain of victims\u2019 families. \u201cMy baby daddy died tragically when you stabbed him\u2026 Somebody was raped\u2026 we must never, ever forget that what happened to them will impact them for the rest of their lives,\u201d she said. \u201cBut then, there\u2019s also the education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee warned that excluding inmates would violate the principle of access. \u201cThe United Nations speaks about education being a right\u2026 If we do otherwise, we\u2019re discriminating and that\u2019s a flaw in the realm of universities,\u201d she said.<\/p>

The Lifelong Learning Unit has accepted incarcerated students for years. Registration for its 2026 short courses is now open on the UWI website, with classes meeting twice weekly at the Five Islands Campus.<\/p>
