(CNN<\/strong>)- Chinese e-commerce platform\u00a0Shein<\/a>\u00a0announced on Monday a \u201ccomplete ban\u201d on sex dolls on its site\u00a0<\/strong>after France threatened to cut off its access to the French market.<\/p>

Over the weekend, France\u2019s anti-fraud office, the DGCCRF, accused the fast-fashion platform<\/a> of selling sex dolls \u201cwith a childlike appearance,\u201d saying in a statement: \u201cTheir description and their categorization on the site make it difficult to doubt the pedopornographic nature of the content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dolls were available for purchase on the French version of Shein\u2019s platform until 4 a.m. local time Monday, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV, which prompted a stark warning from French Finance Minister Roland Lescure.<\/p>

\u201cI want to be very clear: If these behaviors are repeated, we will be entitled to\u2026 ban access to the French market for the Shein platform,\u201d he told BFMTV Monday. \u201cThese horrible objects are illegal,\u201d he added.<\/p>

Amid the controversy, Shein said it had implemented a \u201ccomplete ban on all sex-doll products, removing every related listing and visual from the platform,\u201d telling CNN in a Monday statement that its \u201cadult products\u201d category had been temporarily delisted while a comprehensive review was carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Tang, Shein\u2019s executive chairman, said the \u201cfight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for SHEIN.\u201d<\/p>

The Chinese-founded company said in an earlier statement that the relevant products were removed from sale as soon as the company became aware of \u201cthese serious issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe take this matter extremely seriously,\u201d that statement said. \u201cSuch content is completely unacceptable and goes against everything we stand for. We are taking immediate corrective actions and reinforcing our internal controls to prevent this from happening again.\u201d<\/p>

The timing of this scandal couldn\u2019t be worse for the Chinese platform. On Wednesday, Shein is due to open its very first brick-and-mortar store in Paris \u2013 the first in the world \u2013 which will be followed by more shops across France.<\/p>

French authorities have passed the case onto French prosecutors, as well as the French telecom regulator, according to Lescure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its statement, the anti-fraud office said the sharing of pedophilic material on \u201celectronic networks\u201d is punishable with up to seven years\u2019 imprisonment and a \u20ac100,000 ($115,000) fine under French law. It also said the sale of the dolls shows Shein does not have sufficient safeguards in place against minors accessing pornographic material on its website, also a crime under French law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France\u2019s High Commissioner for Childhood, Sarah El-Ha\u00efry, told BFMTV Monday that she wanted to identify both the sellers and buyers of these dolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, online retail giant Amazon<\/a> was embroiled in a similar affair, after third-party sellers used the platform to hawk child sex dolls. Amazon removed the products from sale.<\/p>\n
