Every Independence season, we hear about\u00a0how strong our economy is. The Prime Minister tells us that Antigua and Barbuda is \u201cgrowing,\u201d that our \u201cper-capita income\u201d is rising, and that the country is \u201csolid, stable, and soaring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as an ordinary working Antiguan, I can\u2019t help but wonder \u2014 where is this growth, and who is really feeling it?<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Because it surely isn\u2019t us, the everyday people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I walk into the supermarket and watch the prices climb higher every week. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A bag of rice, a tin of milk, even basic fruits \u2014 everything costs more. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Light and water bills keep going up, and every time I hear about another \u201cfuel surcharge,\u201d I brace myself for a higher APUA bill.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, salaries remain the same. Most jobs still pay barely enough to cover rent, food, and transport. By the middle of the month, many of us are already broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when the government says the economy is doing well, it honestly feels like someone is cooking the figures. Because the math doesn\u2019t add up in our homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the economy is \u201cbooming,\u201d why does life feel harder? Why are young people leaving for better opportunities abroad? Why do small businesses struggle to stay open while a few well-connected ones seem to get every contract and concession?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They talk about \u201cper-capita income,\u201d but that\u2019s just an average that hides the truth \u2014 a few people at the top are doing extremely well, while the rest of us are just trying to survive. You can\u2019t eat GDP growth. You can\u2019t pay your light bill with per-capita income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antiguans and Barbudans are hardworking people. We don\u2019t expect miracles. We just want fairness, opportunity, and a system that gives everyone a chance \u2014 not just the friends and family of those in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 44 years of independence, we should not still be struggling to afford groceries and utilities in a country that\u2019s supposedly \u201csoaring.\u201d It\u2019s time for real talk and real change. Growth means nothing if the people can\u2019t feel it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
