April 6th<\/sup>,\n2019, marks twenty-five (25) years since Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic\nof Cuba established diplomatic relations. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

On April 6th<\/sup>,\n1994, the Governments of Antigua and Barbuda and the Republic of Cuba signed a\njoint communiqu\u00e9 in New York, which formalized the establishment of diplomatic\nrelations between the two countries.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, pioneering\nleaders, namely the former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Lester\nBird, and the late former President of the Republic of Cuba, Fidel Castro,\nrecognized the potential for an excellent and constructive friendship. Their\nacute foresight laid the foundation for the exceptionally close relations,\nwhich successive leaders have continued to build upon today.  <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Diplomatic relations between\nAntigua and Barbuda are characterized by solidarity, support, and mutually\nbeneficial cooperation. Bilateral relations were further consolidated by\nincreased high-level visits, especially in 2017 when His Excellency Raul\nCastro, former President of the Republic of Cuba, visited Antigua and Barbuda\nfor the convening of the CARICOM-Cuba Summit, and for a bilateral meeting with\nthe Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Over the ensuing\ndecades, Cuba has made significant contributions towards Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s\nsocioeconomic development through assistance in health, education, public\nworks, sports, and culture, amongst others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba\u2019s extensive\ndeployment of medical personnel to Antigua and Barbuda has served to bolster\nhealth services, and has improved patient access to quality healthcare. In\naddition, Cuba has contributed towards the building of human resource capacity\nin Antigua and Barbuda through the provision of scholarships. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In\n2018, the main cooperation initiatives extended to Antigua and Barbuda by Cuba\nwere the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Fifty four (54) members of the Cuban Medical Brigade worked\nwith the Ministry Health and provided extensive health services to Antiguan and\nBarbudan nationals <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Three (3) hydraulic resources engineers worked with the\nAntigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA)<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Two (2) construction engineers worked within the Ministry of\nPublic Works<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, eleven (11) students obtained scholarships granted by the Cuban\ngovernment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present,\nseventy-five (75) students of Antiguan and Barbudan nationality are presently undertaken\nstudies in Cuba. Areas of studies include: Accounting, Psychology,\nArchitecture, Physical Education, Electrical Engineering, Informatics, Spanish\nas a second language, and General Medicine. Medical Specialties include General\nSurgery, Urology, Oncology, Pediatrics and Imageology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nGovernment and people of Cuba have demonstrated unwavering generosity despite\nthe punitive measures that have been imposed on the country in the form of a\nsix-decade economic embargo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this\nconnection, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda remains fully committed\ntowards the principles of the United Nations Charter, and in particular, the sovereign\nequality of states, non-intervention and non-interference in internal affairs.\nThe Government continues to reiterate its call for the ending of the unjust\neconomic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of\nAmerica against the Republic of Cuba. <\/p>\n
