PM Browne Dismisses Yves Ephraim\u2019s Claims as \u2018False and Misleading\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has dismissed commentary by Yves Ephraim regarding the government\u2019s new property legislation, accusing him of spreading misinformation and misleading the public.<\/p>

Speaking on his Browne and Browne Show<\/em>, Browne said Ephraim \u201cgot it wrong\u201d when he claimed the government could sell people\u2019s properties after 30 days of nonpayment. The Prime Minister described the statement as \u201cfalse\u201d and \u201ca lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see this guy Yves Ephraim \u2014 he has a propensity to promote misinformation,\u201d Browne said. \u201cHe picks up things that are not truthful, said by the opposition, and then takes this moralistic, sanctimonious position writing in the papers. But Yves, you need to get the facts.\u201d<\/p>

Browne said the Tax Administration and Procedure (Amendment) Bill<\/strong> does not authorize the government to seize or sell any property within such a short period. \u201cIt\u2019s not true,\u201d Browne said. \u201cThe law allows for process, and there\u2019s no history of any sale of any property in this country \u2014 much less to be selling after five years.\u201d<\/p>

He said the Act clarifies how the government can address long-abandoned and derelict properties, not homes that are occupied. \u201cWe\u2019re going to put a process in place to break down these properties and keep them clean,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we get to the stage of selling, it\u2019s only after many years of nonpayment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne also said he had corrected attorney Sheffield Bowen<\/strong>, who previously made the same 30-day claim, and noted that Boyne later acknowledged his error. \u201cSheffield is a lawyer, and he knows he got it wrong,\u201d Browne said. \u201cAnd now you have this dude \u2014 Yves \u2014 trying to get my attention, saying we\u2019re going to sell people\u2019s property in 30 days. Really?\u201d<\/p>

The Prime Minister accused Ephraim of deliberately misleading the public and described his behavior as \u201cdeceptive.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s very unfortunate that he\u2019s so deceptive,\u201d Browne said. \u201cAnd coming from somebody like him, the public is inclined to lean into what he\u2019s saying and give it some credence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne said the government has no intention of taking people\u2019s homes and that the amendment is designed to promote cleaner and safer communities. \u201cWe\u2019re not trying to disenfranchise anyone of their property,\u201d he said. \u201cOur intent is to empower people through property ownership.\u201d<\/p>
