PM Browne: Restitution Preferable to Prolonged Investigations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a> says restitution <\/a>is often a better approach than lengthy and costly corruption investigations that yield little financial recovery<\/a> for the state.<\/p>

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Browne argued that in many cases, \u201cpeople are guilty and you can\u2019t find them guilty in the court of law,\u201d resulting in years of legal delays and millions spent on probes.<\/p>

He cited past cases, including one involving former government figures, which he said demonstrated how investigations can drag on without producing convictions or returning funds to the public purse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we can get these people to cooperate and they decide to provide restitution with the understanding that there\u2019s no repeat, I think it\u2019s a win-win for everybody,\u201d Browne said. <\/p>

\u201cWe recover a few million dollars\u2026 it\u2019s less money that we probably have to pay them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister added that his comments were not limited to any one case, noting that corruption and misuse of public funds have spanned administrations.<\/p>
