The Wadadli Youth Pen Prize congratulates Vivian Luke, whose\nbook, F.A.K.E.<\/em>, netted the most votes\nin its #readAntiguaBarbuda #voteAntiguaBarbuda Book of the Year initiative.<\/p>

On being informed of the news, Luke said in a statement, \u201cThank\nyou to everyone who took the time to vote for my book\u2026  Writing is a gift but the ability to conceive\nof and complete a well-structured story that is well received is a dream for\nany author.  So, I must congratulate the\nrest of the authors who were part of this process as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winning author has picked the Foundation Mixed School,\nalma mater of her mother and aunt, to receive a donation of books \u2013 valued at EC$900\n\u2013 in her name. The donation is made possible by three Wadadli Pen patrons all\nof whom volunteered to make contributions anonymously \u2013 a fourth patron donated\na copy of Roget\u2019s Thesaurus.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Luke is a senior executive consultant and mother of two in\nthe US. She is connected to Antigua and Barbuda through a line that goes back\nto her maternal great-great grandfather, with both sets of grandparents being\nborn and raised in Antigua. She describes herself as \u201ca proud Antiguan \u2013 1st\ngeneration removed.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Voters described F.A.K.E.<\/em>\nas \u201ca must read (that) reinforces the importance of creating true friendships,\u201d\n\u201ca page turner that shows us that friendship is valuable and we don\u2019t need to\nlive fake lives when we\u2019re surrounded by real friends\u201d and, simply, \u201ca great read\u201d.\nThe people have spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F.A.K.E.<\/em> picked up\nthe majority by one vote in a photo finish with Shawn N. Maile\u2019s How to Work Six Jobs on an Island: an Island\nBoy\u2019s Dream<\/em> \u2013 described, among other things, as \u201ca great example of time\nmanagement and maximizing resources.\u201d The book with the third most votes is\nRilzy Adams\u2019 The Gift<\/em> \u2013 a romance\ndescribed by one voter as \u201cheartwarming and heartwrenching at the same time\u201d. <\/p>

The top three authors will be presented with certificates of\ntheir achievement during a brief ceremony at the Best of Books Monday 8th<\/sup>\nApril 2019 at 10:00 a.m., at which time children from the Foundation Mixed will\nhave the opportunity to select books for their school library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative is consistent \u2013 especially in a year when\nthe usual writing challenge is absent \u2013 with Wadadli Pen\u2019s mission since 2004 to\nnurture and showcase Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s literary culture, a culture which,\nas illustrated by Luke\u2019s win and Maile\u2019s especially strong showing begins here\nbut is not limited to our shores.<\/p>

In it she spoke of her love of\nwriting being fostered by a love of reading which she modelled from her parents,\nand urges, the children to \u201cRead, Read, Read so that your intellectual\ncuriosity may be heightened.\u201d<\/p>
