Parliament Approves Compulsory Land Acquisition in St. Mary\u2019s South for Housing Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House of Representatives <\/a>has approved a resolution for the compulsory acquisition of land in St. Mary\u2019s South<\/a><\/strong>, paving the way for a new government housing project aimed at empowering young families and residents in the area.<\/p>

The motion was introduced by Attorney General and St. John\u2019s City South MP Sir Steadroy Benjamin<\/strong>, who said the resolution was brought under Section 3 of the Land Acquisition Act (Cap. 233)<\/strong> to facilitate the construction of 50 homes for young people<\/strong> through a government-funded initiative valued at approximately EC$10 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis acquisition is for a public purpose,\u201d Sir Steadroy told Parliament. \u201cThe government has made a determination that this land is needed for a housing project that will directly benefit the young people of St. Mary\u2019s South.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Attorney General explained that the Cabinet had already issued a decision authorizing the declaration, and that all legal steps were being taken in accordance with established procedures to ensure that landowners are fairly compensated.<\/p>

\u201cWe are following the law to the letter,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery property acquired under this Act is subject to due process, fair valuation, and compensation as required.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition members voiced support for the project in principle but called for greater consultation<\/strong> between the government and constituency representatives to ensure that developments reflect local priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One opposition member argued that parliamentary representatives should always be engaged early in the planning stages for such projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding, Sir Steadroy welcomed the spirit of cooperation across the aisle, noting that the government\u2019s goal is to ensure all Antiguans and Barbudans benefit from the country\u2019s development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to see every young person have a chance to own a home,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is part of building a fair and inclusive society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution was passed without objection<\/strong>, with the Speaker formally declaring, \u201cThe ayes have it. The resolution has been passed successfully through this House.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials said the project will be developed in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and will focus on providing affordable, climate-resilient homes<\/strong>. Construction is expected to begin following completion of the acquisition and subdivision process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
