Pringle and Lewis Call for Increase in Constituency Allowance<\/strong>
Opposition MPs Say $2,000 Too Low to Meet Community Needs<\/em><\/p>

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle<\/strong> and MP Richard Lewis<\/strong> have called for an increase in the constituency allowance<\/strong>, saying the current allocation of $2,000<\/strong> is insufficient to effectively meet the needs of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Thursday\u2019s sitting of Parliament, Lewis said Members of Parliament \u201cshould be given the tools and resources necessary to do their work,\u201d noting that the allowance \u201cneeds to be increased.\u201d He proposed raising it to $5,000<\/strong>, describing that amount as a more realistic figure to cover community expenses.<\/p>

\u201cAntigua is a small place,\u201d Lewis told the House. \u201cWe don\u2019t have the kind of resources to do what other islands do, but we can do something, and it will benefit all of us.\u201d<\/p>

He added that the issue was not about politics but fairness, saying, \u201cI\u2019m an opposition MP today. Tomorrow, you might be an opposition MP. So this is not even about me. Who comes after me\u2014and they\u2019re in opposition\u2014what happens to them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle supported the call and said that in the absence of an increase, state resources must be distributed more equitably<\/strong>. \u201cIn the absence of the increase in constituency allowance, the resources of state must be fairly distributed,\u201d Pringle said.<\/p>

The Opposition members said the small allowance makes it difficult to respond to constituents\u2019 requests for help with minor repairs, community projects, and social assistance. They urged the government to review the system to ensure that all MPs, regardless of party, are able to serve their constituents effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/strong> acknowledged the concern and said the request could be reviewed, though he noted that any adjustment would have to be made within the country\u2019s fiscal limits.<\/p>
