ST. JOHN\u2019S, Antigua \u2014 With thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall continuing to lash Antigua and Barbuda, officials are urging residents\u2014particularly students and parents\u2014to take extra precautions and follow lightning safety guidelines.<\/p>

Meteorological officials reminded the public that during periods of thunder and lightning, it is critical to remain indoors or avoid open areas. Residents should seek shelter immediately if they see lightning or hear thunder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen thunder roars, go indoors,\u201d the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services warned, noting that even distant storms can pose serious danger.<\/p>

Those caught outside are advised to avoid open spaces, tall objects, and bodies of water, and not to stand outdoors while waiting for transportation. Students are encouraged to remain indoors until weather conditions improve.<\/p>

Officials also reiterated the \u201c30-30 Rule\u201d for lightning safety: if 30 seconds or less elapse between seeing lightning and hearing thunder, seek shelter immediately. Individuals should stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before resuming outdoor activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities caution that lightning can strike several miles from the storm\u2019s center. Residents are also advised to avoid using electrical appliances, stay off wired devices, and keep away from balconies or porches during active lightning.<\/p>
