The Fisheries Division Conference Room at Point Wharf was abuzz with activity and anticipation this morning as many key stakeholders from across the Caribbean gathered\u2014both in person and virtually\u2014for the Inaugural Annual Project Virtual Symposium on Next Generation Sweet Potato Production in the Caribbean.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Delivering warm greetings on behalf of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs (MALFBE), Mr. Gregory Bailey, Director of Agriculture and Chair of the Project Steering Committee, set a tone of collaboration, innovation, and shared purpose.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In his address, Mr. Bailey acknowledged the protocols established by Symposium Chair Mr. Gregg Rawlins, and expressed gratitude for the diverse participation from regional and international partners, researchers, farmers, and representatives of agricultural institutions who have been instrumental in driving this initiative forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that the sweet potato is far more than a staple crop\u2014it stands as a symbol of resilience, heritage, and sustenance for the Caribbean people. \u201cHere in Antigua and Barbuda, and across our region,\u201d he stated, \u201csweet potato remains a vital pillar of food security. Its versatility\u2014from farm to fork\u2014positions it as a leader in value chain development, agricultural diversification, and the transformation of our food systems.\u201d<\/p>

Mr. Bailey described the symposium as both a milestone and a catalyst\u2014an opportunity to reflect on progress, consolidate lessons learned, and strengthen the regional partnerships that will sustain future agricultural innovation. He encouraged participants to engage fully, ask critical questions, and continue the collaboration beyond the symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaffirming Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s unwavering commitment to this transformative initiative, Mr. Bailey highlighted the importance of establishing a Caribbean Sweet Potato Community of Practice\u2014a network designed to promote knowledge sharing, innovation, and lasting regional partnerships.<\/p>
