On Monday, The British High Commissioner, Her Excellency\nJanice Douglas, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the\nHonorable E.P. Chet Green, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Trade\nto hold discussions on the UK- Antigua relations among key areas of common\ninterest.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Her Excellency praised the initiatives being implemented by\nthe Government of Antigua and Barbuda to curb plastic pollution caused by the\naccumulation of plastic waste in the environment. She noted the strides the\ngovernment has taken in becoming climate resilient. The High Commissioner said,\n“Antigua is a pioneer in the management of climate change and is setting a\ngood example for other countries throughout the region. Whenever I travel\nwithin the OECS I always remark that Antigua is in the lead when it comes to\nclimate change policies.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her talks, Ms. Douglas also disclosed that the Government\nof the UK, later this week, is scheduled to announce a compensation package for\nindividuals who were adversely affected by anti-immigration policies and\npractices also known as Windrush. She added that guidance will be provided for\nindividuals who are eligible.<\/p>

Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Minister Greene in\nresponding to Her Excellency\u2019s remarks re-affirmed the Government of Antigua\nand Barbuda\u2019s commitment to adopting environmentally friendly policies and\nexpressed gratitude for UK\u2019s continued support. They further signaled the\nGovernment\u2019s concern with the treatment of the Windrush generation stressing\nthat Antigua and Barbuda will continue to monitor the situation and the\nproposals for the compensation.<\/p>

Minister Browne also thanked the UK for the support extended\nfor the rehabilitation of the Sir George Walter Highway and Friars Hill Road.\nProgress, he stated, has been slow but he remains hopeful that the project will\nbe completed in due time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Browne continues to solicit the support of\nthe UK in the ongoing advocacy for the recognition of the vulnerability and\nlimited resilience of small states. The island is due to graduate in 2020 and\nwill continue to engage the UK on the issue.<\/p>

Her Excellency also announced that we are a step closer to\nfinalizing a Resident British High Commissioner Office. “A location has\nbeen identified that will serve as a joint residence and office for the\nResident British High Commissioner,” Ms. Douglas commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The office will serve\nas a mechanism to strengthen its cooperation with the Caribbean and as part of\nits New Caribbean Strategy. It is anticipated that the symbolic opening\nceremony for the New British High Commission in Antigua and Barbuda will be\nheld in the upcoming months<\/p>

The discussions ended with both Minister Greene and Prime\nMinister Browne conveying the Government\u2019s best of wishes for the UK\u2019s hosting\nof Cricket World Cup 2019.<\/p>
