Government Moves Forward with New Port in Barbuda for Trade and Tourism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The government is advancing plans to build a new port in Barbuda as part of efforts to expand trade and tourism infrastructure on the sister island.<\/p>

During Thursday\u2019s post-Cabinet press briefing, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant<\/strong> confirmed that discussions have been ongoing for some time and that a potential site has now been identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merchant said there is \u201ca need for a new port in Barbuda,\u201d explaining that \u201cit is the intention of the government to construct a new port to improve trade and tourism, with the docking of yachts and so forth on Barbuda at an approved port.\u201d<\/p>

He said senior government officials recently traveled to the island \u201cto assess the suitability of that area that was selected,\u201d adding that a full report is expected soon.<\/p>

Merchant noted that the new facility will support Barbuda\u2019s growing tourism industry, which continues to attract increased investment. \u201cAs you know, Barbuda has been developing by leaps and bounds, and tourism is one of its major industries there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the site assessment is completed, the Cabinet is expected to review design and construction options before moving ahead with the project.<\/p>
