Antigua <\/a>has always had statues<\/a>. Stone reminders of people most of us never met, achievements we barely remember, and empires that never cared for us.<\/p>

They stand quietly on church facades, in public parks, and in the hallways of power \u2014 the marble faces of saints, politicians, and colonizers alike. Nobody calls those \u201cgraven images.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody starts a crusade.  Recently , an Antiguan artist has sculpted something original \u2014 something that doesn\u2019t come from Europe\u2019s imagination or government order \u2014 and suddenly the island\u2019s moral compass starts spinning like a broken fan.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The latest uproar over the statue on All Saints Road isn\u2019t about religion, art, or national pride. It\u2019s about control. It\u2019s about who gets to define what is sacred and what isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The irony is blinding: we live in a country where corruption, deceit, and violence barely stir a whisper, but a piece of sculpted stone brings out the marching orders.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

For context, the verses being thrown around \u2014 Exodus 20:4\u20135 and Hosea 4:6 \u2014 have been lying dormant through centuries of colonial statuary and religious decoration. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Nobody quotes them at the Cathedral, nobody preaches them when they walk past the\u00a0 likenesses of men who helped write the nation\u2019s inequality into law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the moment an Antiguan dares to sculpt his own interpretation of prophecy, everyone suddenly becomes a theologian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be honest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outrage is pathetic. Antigua has never been a society deeply immersed in art or symbolism. We don\u2019t have the habit of questioning what we see, as a matter of fact, it seems that in our society that \u201cgood people\u201d, don\u2019t rock the boat, and that\u2019s why anything\u00a0 thought provoking orunfamiliar gets branded as evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t about blasphemy \u2014 it\u2019s about discomfort. A local artist contracted by a religious leader and led by BIBLICAL descriptions, dared to stepped out of the narrow box this country reserves for \u201cacceptable expression,\u201d and that alone was enough to trigger the self-righteous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the same voices decrying a statue as \u201cungodly\u201d stay conveniently silent on matters that actually degrade this island: greed masquerading as governance, exploitation dressed as opportunity, and mediocrity baptized as tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moral theatre is endless \u2014 people who can\u2019t manage decency in daily life performing outrage over a rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should have been a proud moment \u2014 an Antiguan sculptor producing something daring, interpretive, and locally rooted \u2014 has instead become a spectacle of insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the truth is, many of us still can\u2019t tell the difference between art and idolatry, expression and offense, reflection and rebellion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that ignorance, not any statue, is the real graven image carved into our collective conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem isn\u2019t that the statue stands; it\u2019s that we, as a people, refuse to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We shrink behind borrowed morality whenever we fear thinking for ourselves. We talk about righteousness but can\u2019t handle reflection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We claim to defend faith while betraying reason. The country has become a cesspool of convenient conviction \u2014 loud, brittle, and easily offended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let the so-called faithful rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artist has already done what few in this place ever attempt \u2014 provoke thought, awaken conversation, and, in doing so, expose the deep rot beneath our polished hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statue doesn\u2019t mock faith; it mirrors us. And maybe that\u2019s what really offends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
