Prime Minister Gaston Browne says one or two offshore banks operating in Antigua and Barbuda could be placed under liquidation due to ongoing challenges maintaining correspondent banking relationships.<\/p>

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show<\/em> on Pointe FM, Browne said the affected institutions have struggled to secure or retain correspondent partners abroad \u2014 a requirement for processing international transactions \u2014 amid tightening global banking regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne or two offshore banks may end up being placed under liquidation because of corresponding banking issues,\u201d Browne said. \u201cIt\u2019s a challenge for some of these small institutions to maintain correspondent relationships.\u201d<\/p>

He said the government is monitoring the situation closely and will work with the Financial Services Regulatory Commission (FSRC) to protect depositors and ensure that Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s financial system remains compliant with international standards.<\/p>

Browne emphasized that the challenges are not unique to Antigua and Barbuda, noting that regional offshore sectors continue to feel the effects of \u201cde-risking\u201d policies implemented by larger international banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a global issue affecting small financial centers,\u201d Browne said. \u201cWe have strong regulations in place, and we\u2019ll continue to safeguard our jurisdiction\u2019s integrity.\u201d<\/p>
