Antigua and Barbuda<\/a> has been designated the Caribbean\u2019s first \u201cBlind-Free Zone,\u201d<\/a> an initiative aimed at eliminating preventable blindness through comprehensive screening and early treatment for residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph<\/strong><\/a> made the announcement on Monday during the reopening of the Cobbs Cross Clinic<\/a>, describing the project as a groundbreaking collaboration led by Ambassador Aubrey Webson<\/a><\/strong> and supported by the Ministry of Health.<\/p>

\u201cAmbassador Webson has been able to secure something unique for Antigua and Barbuda,<\/a>\u201d Joseph said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom the village of Jennings on Cook\u2019s Hill all the way south, including Cobbs Cross, every resident in that zone will have the opportunity to be screened for their eyesight.\u201d<\/p>

The initiative, which is part of the government\u2019s broader vision to expand community health services, will ensure that residents within the designated zone receive free eye screening, diagnosis, and follow-up care<\/strong>. <\/p>

According to the minister, the effort reflects a proactive approach to reducing blindness caused by untreated conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Joseph said the Ministry of Health will provide the infrastructure to support the program through local clinics, ensuring access to specialized care closer to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will put the infrastructure in place so that every resident has the opportunity to protect their vision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cBlind-Free Zone\u201d initiative complements the government\u2019s ongoing investment in primary healthcare<\/strong>, including rebuilding or repairing 17 of the country\u2019s 23 community clinics and expanding diagnostic services outside the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a marvelous achievement for Antigua and Barbuda,\u201d Joseph said. \u201cIt shows how innovation, partnership, and vision can transform public health in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
