Prime Minister Gaston Browne<\/a> says Antigua and Barbuda<\/a> is on course to welcome more than one million cruise visitors<\/a> this season, marking a record high for the twin-island nation\u2019s tourism industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show<\/em> on Pointe FM, Browne attributed the milestone to the government\u2019s decision six years ago to partner with Global Ports Holding (GPH)<\/a> \u2014 a move he said has transformed the country\u2019s cruise tourism infrastructure.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGlobal Ports just announced, you know, this season, 25\/26, is over a million tourists \u2014 cruise tourists alone we\u2019re having coming to this country now,\u201d Browne said. \u201cOne million. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This is a decision that we took six years ago. They criticized us. They even made a point, they tried to make a point that 30 years was too long. But look at it now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister said GPH has already invested nearly US$80 million<\/strong> into the port redevelopment project and is still years away from turning a profit.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGlobal Ports has not made a single dollar in profit,\u201d he said. \u201cSo far, they would have invested nearly 80 million U.S. dollars. It will take some time to amortize that for them to make a profit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when we looked at the World Bank model, the average is about 30 years. It\u2019s not that we gave Global Ports anything special.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Browne said the partnership has enhanced Antigua\u2019s position as a major cruise destination, with new land-based amenities and commercial spaces being built along Newgate Street to improve the visitor experience.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat they have done is improve the product to the extent that we have a far better cruise tourism product now,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven the land-based facilities that they\u2019re constructing here \u2014 it\u2019s going to add to the visitor experience so that Antigua <\/a>is now becoming a marquee destination within the Caribbean region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister also said the upcoming winter tourism season is shaping up to be one of the strongest in years, with hotels across the island reporting encouraging bookings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe also expect a bumper season for overnight tourists,\u201d Browne said. \u201cMost of the hoteliers that I spoke with said that they\u2019re expecting very strong bookings for 25\/26.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Browne described the record cruise arrivals and strong stayover numbers as evidence that the government\u2019s development model is yielding results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are making progress in every aspect of our development \u2014 infrastructure, roads, water,\u201d he said. \u201cAntigua and Barbuda is now becoming a marquee destination within the Caribbean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
