Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs,\nDean Jonas, lead a delegation to Cuba which resulted in substantial gains for\nthe agriculture sector in Antigua and Barbuda. <\/p>

The minister , who was accompanied by Ambassador Daven\nJoseph and Deputy Director of Agriculture Cheryl Edwards,  has in previous forums,  underscored the importance of building the\nframework for increased livestock and poultry production, if Antigua and\nBarbuda is to be self sufficient in meat production and meat products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Livestock and poultry farmers are already embracing\nthe new and exciting development plans outlined by the ministry, at a standing\nroom only meeting that was held at the ministry\u2019s headquarters earlier this\nmonth.<\/p>

According to the Acting Director of Agriculture, the purpose\nof the just concluded visit to Cuba was to discuss some amendments to the Memorandum\nof Understanding (MOU) that was signed in 2016 with the Republic of Cuba, to\nprovide technical support for Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s National Food Security and\nSovereignty Action Plan. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, discussions focused on support in\nthe development of the livestock sector, with the initial emphasis on pork and\npoultry using cutting edge technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support for the commercial production of corn, cotton, cassava and sweet potato, to develop feeding systems for the proposed expanded life-stock sector, was also discussed.<\/p>

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Edwards noted that support\nin the expansion of the agro-forestry sector, particularly in the area of\nproviding planting material for various tropical fruit crops was also among\nother major items on the agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support in the apiculture\nindustry with other value added products such as royal Jelly, Rain water harvesting\nand irrigation systems, were other crucial areas that generated much\ndiscussions at the meeting.<\/p>

The culmination of these discussions resulted in the\nsigning of a Contract of Agreement to provide technical assistance services and\nproducts, between the Republic of Cuba and Antigua & Barbuda, which will\nlead to a cooperation agreement pertaining to agricultural development between\nboth countries.<\/p>

A brigade of 13 specialists will be arriving in\nAntigua in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts will include nine veterinarians with specialties\nin reproduction, nutrition and bee genetics; three water engineers who will also\nassist in agro-forestry and fruit crops; and one geologist to assist with water\nmapping and expansion.<\/p>\n
