Social Security Director: Government Has Not Borrowed From Fund<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Social Security <\/a>Director says the current Antigua Labour Party (ALP<\/a>) administration has not borrowed any money from the Social Security Scheme<\/a>, describing it as a clear sign of commitment to the fund\u2019s stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show<\/em>, the director said the government has shown \u201cdemonstrable physical action\u201d toward clearing outstanding liabilities.<\/p>

\u201cThe current Antigua Labour Party administration has not borrowed dollar one from Social Security,\u201d he said. \u201cIt has demonstrated not only a commitment, but physical action in its plan to clear off that liability to the betterment of the people of Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He added that while payments fell short during the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, the government stepped in to keep the scheme current.<\/p>

\u201cWhen we have fallen short in the past, as we did during COVID, they stood in the breach and brought us to where we are today \u2014 current with payments and advancing with the processing of those payments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director also assured the public that the scheme is stable and projected to remain so for years to come. <\/p>

\u201cOur aim is to do so well beyond the actual date when we should be in jeopardy, which is 2031,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remarks follow opposition criticism of the scheme\u2019s arrears and come as the government signals its intention to fully settle outstanding contributions.<\/p>
