UNITED NATIONS \u2014 Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Friday called for a halt to seabed mining until science can prove it will not cause serious harm, urging world leaders to prioritize the protection of oceans that small island nations depend on for survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor islands like mine, the ocean is not scenery. It is the source of food and jobs and the opportunity for new chances of growth and development,\u201d Browne told the U.N. General Assembly. \u201cBut it must be protected\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He pressed for \u201cdecisive action against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, plastics that choke reefs, and pollution that steals mangroves,\u201d warning that these threats undermine both livelihoods and ecosystems.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs custodians of vast, exclusive economic zones, small islands offer partnership and stewardship,\u201d Browne said. \u201cLet us back robust global plastics and fossil fuel non-proliferation treaties. Expand blue carbon finance for mangroves and seagrass\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also called for greater technological cooperation, urging that \u201cmaritime domain awareness and the provision of satellite and data sharing services [become] standard support for SIDS\u201d.<\/p>

\u201cUntil independent science proves no serious harm, we support a moratorium on seabed mining,\u201d Browne declared. \u201cNo one should mortgage the ocean floor to pay for short-term bills\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded by insisting that \u201claw must be our guardrail\u201d and linked Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s efforts with Vanuatu\u2019s in seeking international legal clarity on states\u2019 climate obligations, framing the defense of oceans as both an environmental and legal imperative.<\/p>
