Following the passing of the late\nDr. Margaret O\u2019Garra, the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, His\nExcellency Sir Rodney Williams expressed condolences to the family of Dr.\nO\u2019Garra who, though born in Montserrat, lived and worked in Antigua and Barbuda\nfor her entire professional life. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In his letter to the family, His\nExcellency, Sir Rodney shared the sadness that he along with Lady William\nexperienced on learning of the passing of Dr. Magaret O\u2019Garra. However, Sir\nRodney also expounded on the virtues of Dr. O\u2019Garra and described her as an\noutstanding paediatrician whose efforts, during her tenure, helped to\nsignificantly lessen the infant mortality rate in Antigua and Barbuda to the\nlowest in the world. The Governor General stated he had the opportunity of\nworking with Dr. O\u2019Garra at the Holberton Hospital and found her to be highly\nknowledgeable, committed to her profession and to the patients under her care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While at Holberton Hospital Dr.\nO\u2019Garra served as a consultant both in medicine and paediatrics.  She served at all levels of medical\nadministration and acted on numerous occasions as the Medical Superintendent\nand Chief Medical Officer. Dr. O\u2019Garra was responsible for establishing the\nChildren\u2019s Ward. It is also noteworthy that the Adele School for Special Needs,\nwhich is still operational, was established by Dr. Adele Savory and Dr.\nMargaret O\u2019Garra to enable the differently-abled to maximize their fullest\npotential. <\/p>

Prior to her passing, His\nExcellency Sir Rodney Williams nominated Dr. O\u2019Garra for an honour from Her Majesty\nQueen Elizabeth II as the nation\u2019s way of expressing its gratitude for her\noutstanding services in health care for over 50 years to Antigua and Barbuda.\nHer Majesty approved the nomination and conferred upon her right of membership\nas a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).<\/p>
