Barge Purchase Advances Dredging Projects at St. John\u2019s and Crabbs Harbours<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda <\/a>is moving ahead with plans to buy a barge to support dredging at St. John\u2019s and Crabbs harbours<\/a>, a step officials say is critical to ongoing port expansion.<\/p>

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant told reporters at Thursday\u2019s Cabinet press briefing that two barges have been identified, and the government is working to select the most cost-effective option without sacrificing quality.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEquipment that was procured a few weeks ago cannot function without the barge,\u201d Merchant said. \u201cAnd so the barge is of necessity to ensure that the dredging continues at the St. John\u2019s Port and also at Crabs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dredging is part of a wider upgrade of port infrastructure that also includes the arrival of a US$6.2 million mobile harbor crane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials say the investment will improve cargo handling and cruise ship capacity, positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a more competitive shipping and tourism hub in the Eastern Caribbean.<\/p>
