The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is closely monitoring Hurricane Gabrielle, currently located over the central subtropical Atlantic, and issuing regular advisories as it continues its west-northwest trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the central and western tropical Atlantic, an elongated area of low pressure, several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands, is showing signs of organisation. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Environmental conditions are favourable for further development, and forecasters predict a tropical depression is likely to form later today or Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system is expected to move well north of the Leeward Islands. The NHC reports a high 90% chance of formation over the next 48 hours and maintains the same probability over the next seven days. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gale warnings and other updates can be found in the High Seas Forecasts issued by the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in the eastern Caribbean, a tropical wave over the northeastern Caribbean Sea is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The system is moving west-northwest at 15 to 20 mph and is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands today, and to the Dominican Republic by tonight.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Forecasters say the wave will slow down and turn northwestward as it reaches the southwestern Atlantic later this week. Conditions are expected to become more favourable for development near the Bahamas, where a tropical depression may form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NHC advises residents in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Bahamas to monitor the system closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to survey the area this afternoon to collect environmental data if required. The system currently has a 30% chance of development over the next 48 hours, rising to 80% over the next seven days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
