Foreign Ministers from across the Commonwealth convened today at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the \u00a025th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers<\/a> Meeting (CFAMM), chaired by Samoa\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Toelupe Maoiautele Poumulinuku Onesemo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting on the margins of the 80th UN General Assembly, ministers\u00a0expressed overwhelming support for the Commonwealth\u2019s role as a champion of multilateralism and collective action at a time of profound global upheaval.<\/p>

They reviewed progress since the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM<\/a>) in Samoa and charted a clear path towards CHOGM 2026 in Antigua and Barbuda<\/a>.<\/p>

In his opening remarks, the Chair,\u00a0Deputy Prime Minister Toelupe,\u00a0<\/strong>said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe role we play at this Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting is crucial, and the issues discussed today are key to implementing the mandates of the CHOGM Leaders from Samoa, to help build a resilient Commonwealth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary-General\u2019s Call: A Commonwealth defined by purpose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Leading her first CFAMM as Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Botchwey <\/strong>called on member states to seize the moment and reinforce the Commonwealth\u2019s unique convening power:<\/p>

\u201cThe multilateral system is under serious pressure, but it remains our greatest tool. Without it, the fractures in our world will deepen. With it, we can still find solutions\u2026 My vision for the Commonwealth is rooted in this conviction: that in a world defined by pressure, the Commonwealth must be defined by purpose,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She underscored that the Commonwealth\u2019s diversity, with 56 members encompassing one-third of humanity, from the world\u2019s largest economies to its smallest states, offers an unmatched platform to defend democracy, unlock economic opportunity, lead in climate action, and empower women and young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFAMM 2025 outcomes: Strengthening resilience, driving reform<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ministers affirmed the\u00a0Strategic Plan 2025\u20132030: Building a More Resilient Commonwealth<\/a>, which centres on democratic, economic and environmental resilience. <\/p>

The plan, co-created with member states and approved by the Commonwealth\u2019s Board of Governors on 10 September, will make the Secretariat \u201csharper, more focused, and more effective in serving you,\u201d the Secretary-General said.<\/p>
