The Venezuelan Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, His\nExcellency Carlos Perez-Silva is leaving his post after six years of being\nstationed in St John\u2019s and during this week he made farewell calls on several\nsenior government officials including Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon E.P Chet\nGreene.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During the call, Minister Greene said while he\nrecognized that diplomats are moved around by their governments from time to\ntime, he is particularly saddened to see the departure of Ambassador\nPerez-Silva who he described as an exemplary servant of the government and\npeople of Venezuela and a friend of Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The foreign minister recalled that immediately after\nthe passage Hurricane Irma in September, 2017 that left Barbuda devastated,\nVenezuela was the first country to respond to Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s appeal for\nassistance. He noted this was despite the South American country having its own\nchallenges at the time. Greene expressed the view that Venezuela\u2019s quick response\nand the way in which it mobilised its scarce resources to respond to Antigua\nand Barbuda\u2019s appeal was nothing short of remarkable.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo have come to our assistance in that time of crisis\nspeaks volume of the close ties of friendship that exist between our two\ncountries and much of this has been because of the personal involvement of\nAmbassador Perez-Silva. This is what diplomacy is all about, and Ambassador\nPerez-Silva has been a model diplomat,\u201d Greene remarked.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He noted too that the ambassador successfully expanded\nthe teaching of Spanish programme he inherited from previous diplomats and that\nthis expansion means that perhaps thousands of Antigua and Barbudans have been\nable to communicate better using Spanish than they did before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the issue of the ongoing difficulties in Venezuela,\nGreene reiterated the Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s position which he said is based on\nthe core values of non-interference, respect for the rule of law and the sovereignty\nof all nations. \u201cThese comprise some of our bedrock principles that are\nunshakeable, unmovable and non-negotiated,\u201d he declared.<\/p>
