In the words of Robert M Hensel \u201cKnow me for my abilities not<\/g> my disability\u201d are words which describe Sylvester Alexander of Seaview Farm. As a member of the disabled community, he is an extraordinary and talented human being who acheived<\/g> the impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sylvester\nloves the sea and he loves to sail. After months of attending the weekly Sailability\nprogramme [Sailing for the disabled] at the National Sailing Academy, he mastered\nthe art of sailing and is now imparting that knowledge to others.   <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a former trainee\nof the National Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre for persons with disabilities,\nhe was always willing to assist others; whether it was gardening, carrying\nbuckets of water or lifting boxes of the monthly supplies for the Centre, he\nwas one of the handymen. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Those living\nwith disabilities are capable of doing much more than we think. We must\nendeavor   to teach and assist them in\norder to develop their God given abilities. There are many with great\npotential, who could be earning a living instead of depending on handouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 We need to improve the quality of life for\nthose with disabilities, by affording them the opportunity to explore and find\ntheir niche. Some maybe excellent at handicraft, paintings or even computer, we\nneed to encourage and foster those talents by placing them in the enabling environment.\n<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

So many have\nthe potential to do much more yet, they are not given the opportunity, they are\nforever rejected or limited but there are still some who will defy the norm. Bob\nBailey and his team at the National Sailing Academy, has taken a leap of faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 As we say in colloquial term, \u201cput your money\nwhere your mouth is\u201d well, they have done exactly that. They recently employed\nSylvester to work full time at the Academy and are very pleased with his\nperformance. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSylvester\nhas matured since being here, he is very focus, he is able to teach others and\nhe loves sailing, he has a permanent job here at the Academy as long as he\nwishes, his employment is a permanent one. His working hours are\nMonday\u2019s\u2014Friday\u2019s 9:00am -5:00pm but he is usually here, way before that\u201d remarked\nBob. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

His job\nentails working closely with his name sake Sylvester Thomas, who is the chief\nsailing instructor at the Academy, Based on his sentiments the other Sylvester\nis doing well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cHe is impacting the work here in a positive\nway, he is very hard working, he is hands on, and loves helping people. He is\nthe first person to arrive here every morning, I love working with him and I\nalso love my job\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Article 0ne [1] of the universal Declaration\nof Human Rights states \u201dAll human beings are born free and equal in dignity and\nrights, they are endowed with reason and conscience and should act toward one\nanother in a spirit of brotherhood..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 In article 3 it states \u201cEveryone has the right\nto life, liberty and security of person\u201d As a society, we owe it to those\nliving with disabilities to treat them right, treat them as you would want to\nbe treated. <\/p>\n
