Barbadian pollster Peter Wickham has commended political parties in Antigua and Barbuda for not fostering violence, contrasting the nation\u2019s political culture with troubling incidents abroad.<\/p>

Speaking on state television, Wickham was asked about political violence following the recent shooting death of Charlie Kirk in the United States. He said while ideological divides run deep in the Caribbean, the relationship between opposing parties does not allow violence to take root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wickham singled out Antigua and Barbuda, saying parties there recognise the importance of maintaining civility despite entrenched differences. \u201cPeople may not realise it the way they speak to each other, but there is a private level of relationships that I think is good and speaks to the way that political parties ought to behave,\u201d he said.<\/p>

He noted that unlike the United States, the Caribbean does not have easy access to firearms, which he described as a key factor in preventing violence. Wickham also recalled Jamaica\u2019s history of politically motivated clashes, but stressed that such incidents have since abated.<\/p>

\u201cI don\u2019t know that the main central movement, certainly the UPP, Antigua Labour Party, would want to encourage that kind of behaviour and I think that\u2019s good,\u201d Wickham added.<\/p>\n
