Teachers\u2019 Union Leader Defends Industrial Action Against Critics<\/strong><\/p>

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers (A&BUT), Casroy Charles, has pushed back against critics who accuse the union of being \u201cmoney hungry,\u201d insisting that its actions are rooted in defending the rights and welfare of teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, teachers have staged industrial action over issues ranging from retroactive payments to the implementation of promotion instruments. While some members of the public have voiced support, others have criticised the union\u2019s approach.<\/p>

Charles dismissed those criticisms, pointing to past disputes over school security and promotions. \u201cPersons will always criticise teachers for standing up for their rights,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen we argued for security, people asked why schools needed it. When we pressed for promotions, they said it was just a piece of paper. And when we demand payment, they accuse us of chasing money. Our job is not to please the public \u2014 it is to ensure employers meet their obligations.\u201d<\/p>

He argued that international labour standards supported the union\u2019s position, citing the principle of \u201cdecent work.\u201d \u201cThe work cannot be decent if you owe me and don\u2019t pay me,\u201d Charles said. \u201cThe work cannot be decent if I am exposed to health hazards. If agreements call for 24-hour security or for retroactive payments after promotions, then we are right to agitate for those.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The union leader stressed that the A&BUT will continue to act whenever members are \u201cdisenfranchised.\u201d He added that recent negotiations on school security and promotions were progressing, and the union was \u201csatisfied thus far\u201d with the government\u2019s efforts.<\/p>
