Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC<\/a>) has joined hospitals worldwide in marking World Sepsis Day<\/a>, calling for greater awareness and early recognition of the life-threatening condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sepsis, which arises from common infections such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections, is responsible for about 11 million deaths globally each year. It can cause organ failure and death if not treated quickly.<\/p>

Dr Margrethe Belle, SLBMC\u2019s Infectious Diseases Specialist, described it as a \u201ctime-critical emergency where every minute counts\u201d, stressing that rapid treatment is vital.<\/p>

Newborns, older people and those with chronic illnesses are at higher risk, while survivors may face long-term health and psychological effects.<\/p>

Dr Belle also highlighted the link between sepsis and antimicrobial resistance, warning that rising resistance limits treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SLBMC said it would continue strengthening infection prevention, antibiotic stewardship and public education in Antigua and Barbuda<\/a>.<\/p>
