Our nation continues to witness a steady increase in lifestyle or non- communicable diseases among which are hypertension, diabetes and kidney diseases. These appear to be taking our nation by its throat financially, as more and more money is being spent annually in the procurement of medicine for such conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 850 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE<\/strong> are\nnow estimated to have kidney diseases from various causes. Chronic Kidney Diseases<\/strong> (CKD)\ncause at least 2.4 million deaths per year and are now the 6th fastest growing\ncause of death.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Acute Kidney Injury<\/strong> (AKI), an important driver of CKD, affects\nover 13 million people worldwide and 85% of these cases are found in low and\nmiddle-income countries (LMICs). Around 1.7 people are estimated to die\nannually because of AKI.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, CKD and AKI are important\ncontributors to increased morbidity and mortality from other\ndiseases and risk factors including cardiovascular disease, diabetes,\nhypertension, obesity, as well as infections such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis,\nand hepatitis. Furthermore, CKD and AKI\nin children, not only lead to substantial morbidity and mortality during\nchildhood but also result in medical issues beyond childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These\ndiseases are non -discriminatory since they affect persons of all age\ncategories. The young, middle age, as well as senior citizens, have all fallen victim to this plague. Many of these\nconditions can be prevented with a change in diet.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

 This\nyear, World\nKidney Day <\/strong>sets out to raise awareness of the high and\nincreasing burden of kidney diseases worldwide and the need for strategies for\nkidney diseases\u2019 prevention and management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nAntigua and Barbuda joins the rest of the\nworld in the observance of World Kidney day under the theme Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere<\/strong>, we\nneed to pay serious attention regarding the number of persons who presently\nrequire dialysis treatment at the Mount St John\u2019s Medical Centre.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There\nare ninety-six dialysis patients in\nAntigua and based on new information, the numbers are expected to increase\nshortly. Maintaining a dialysis unit is no easy feat. It is a huge burden on\nthe taxpayers of this small nation with limited\nfinancial resources.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There\nare two types of kidney disease, acute and chronic.  Acute kidney injury occurs when the kidney\nfunction gets worse over a period of days or weeks. This is different from chronic kidney disease (CKD)<\/a>, where the kidney function may\nchange over months or years. Chronic kidney disease is not caused by physical injury\nto the kidneys.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto Doctor Cattrice Browne, House Officer\nat the Dialysis Unit, some kidney problems can be corrected with treatment if\nit is acute. The most common cause of AKI is a\ncombination of infection and dehydration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acute\ntreatment often involves antibiotics (when it is thought to be related to a\nbacteria). Another form of treatment involves IV fluids (giving fluids into the\nveins through a drip). However, in less severe cases, it may be possible to\ndrink extra fluids rather than take a drip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto Dr. Browne, \u201cSome acute\npatients are dialyzed when there is a decrease in urinary output, shortness of\nbreath, swelling and severe vomiting. They are monitored through laboratory\ntests and physical examination. Once they continue to improve the dialysis treatment\nis discontinued.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chronic kidney disease is defined by an\nabnormality of the kidney which causes the filtration rate to decrease for over\nthree months or more. There are five stages based on the filtration rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The dialysis unit at Mount St. John\u2019s is\nequipped with seventeen [17] machines with three shifts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays,\nand Fridays, from 6:00 am, 10:30 am and\n2:30 pm.  On Wednesdays, there are only\ntwo shifts since that it the day when the machines are disinfected.  On Saturdays, the shifts are at 6.00 am and\n10:30 am. The unit is closed on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\naverage cost for keeping the unit open is two hundred and fifty million dollars.\nThe treatment is free to all Antigua and Barbudan citizens. There is a cost\nattached for CARICOM nationals and international visitors.<\/p>\n
