India has provided formal guarantees to Belgium over the detention conditions of Mehul Choksi, the Antiguan citizen and Indian-born businessman wanted in connection with the multi-billion-rupee Punjab National Bank fraud case.<\/p>

The Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi outlined the commitments in a detailed note to Belgium\u2019s Ministry of Justice, as authorities continue efforts to secure Choksi\u2019s return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choksi, who became a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 through its Citizenship by Investment Programme, was detained in Belgium in April. He is accused alongside his nephew, Nirav Modi, of defrauding the state-run bank of more than \u20b913,000 crore (\u00a31.2bn).<\/p>

According to the assurances, Choksi would receive round-the-clock medical supervision from six doctors, supported by a 20-bed prison hospital equipped with intensive care facilities. Emergency treatment would be available at Mumbai\u2019s Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals, while private care could be arranged at his own expense for existing health conditions.<\/p>

Authorities pledged to house him in Barrack No. 12, a section reserved for non-violent inmates and monitored by CCTV. The guarantees also cover access to legal counsel, family visits, and regular communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commitments were developed with input from the Maharashtra Government and prison officials, and form part of India\u2019s extradition request in a Central Bureau of Investigation case. Choksi faces multiple charges, including conspiracy, breach of trust, fraud, and violations of anti-corruption law.<\/p>

Choksi, who has lived in Antigua and Barbuda for several years, continues to deny wrongdoing. Indian officials, however, insist he must return to stand trial in what is regarded as one of the country\u2019s largest financial scandals.<\/p>\n
