The Government of Japan has, under the \u201cThe Economic and Social Development Programme\u201d made a grant of US$ 1.8 million towards the improvement and upgrades of current fisheries operations in Antigua and Barbuda..<\/g><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Before the signing ceremony, Fisheries Minister Dean Jonas said that Antigua and Barbuda continues<\/g> to place great emphasis on fisheries, oceans, and the marine economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis donation will enable the diversification of the\nsector; it will give Antigua access to international markets for fisheries,\nparticularly the European Union and Asia for the large pelagic type fish. This\nwill also enhance our food security in Antigua and Barbuda. This is quite a\nsignificant contribution and I will like thank the the team in the fisheries Division\nfor putting this project forward and making it happen.\u201d<\/p>

He also lauded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for\nplaying a key role in the realization of this major project.<\/p>

Among those who were present at the Signing Ceremony\nwere Permanent Secretary- Colin O\u2019Keiffe, Principal Assistant Secretary- Annell\nNicholas, Deputy Chief Fisheries Officer- Tricia Lovell and Fisheries Officer –\nHilroy Simon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lovell said that the fisheries division and the\ngovernment of Japan have enjoyed a very long and positive relationship over the\nyears. <\/p>

She showered praises on the high level of assistance that the fisheries sector has received from Japan in improving its overall growth and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMuch of the development that we have seen in\nfisheries has been directly attributed to the government and people of Japan\nand we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you very much for\ncontinuing to support the growth of fisheries in Antigua and Barbuda.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She further explained how exactly fisheries would\nbenefit this time around.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis particular project is really about providing\nequipment that will continue to help us to become more sustainable, to continue\nto diversify the sector as we try to move away from coastal fisheries into more\nlarger scale pelagic fisheries, as we try to prepare for things like  disaster risk reduction and hurricanes that\nwe are plagued with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counsellor\/Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Japan-\nAntigua and Barbuda, Mr. Yoshinori Yakabe, said that it was his pleasure to\nengage in this signing on behalf of his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counsellor Yakabe said that with this grant, the\ngovernment of Antigua and Barbuda will procure fisheries-related equipment such\nas aggregating devices, a hydraulic boat lift, pick-up trucks and a waste water\ntreatment aerator system to improve the operational efficiency and hygienic\nenvironment, which is essential for the fisheries industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will also assist Antigua and Barbuda in achieving\nits policy objectives in food security and nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Japanese official further noted that the\ngovernment of Japan will also contribute to Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Fisheries Sector\nthrough \u201cThe Project for Strengthening Use and Management of Coastal Fisheries\nResource in the CARICOM Countries,\u201d which will be coordinated by the Japan\nInternational Cooperation Agency (JICA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Antigua and Barbuda is among six OECS\ncountries that will benefit from this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda\nhas several landing sites to include Parham, Urlings, Point Wharf and Barbuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the equipment to\nbe procured will be utilized by the fisheries division and provisions are also\nmade in this project for maintenance of the equipment over the long term.<\/p>\n
