The Methodist Church Conference Centre was transformed\ninto a platform for articulation, poise, confidence, creativity and expression\nas six primary schools engaged in a literacy battle in the 3rd<\/sup>\nannual Rotary Club of Antigua\u2019s Reading Competition over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grace Christian Academy School emerged on top for\nthe 2nd<\/sup> year in a row, after four hours of a keenly contested\ncompetition. <\/p>

Two locally authored books, The Wonderful World of\nYohan and Jerimiah: Devil in the Woods were the two literary works that the\nparticipants were given to articulate previously selected portions in-front of\ntheir peers, parents, teachers and most importantly, the judges. Two students\nwere chosen to represent each participating academic institution. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The students selected to read from the Wonderful World\nof Yohan were: Anijah Carr from the Foundation Mixed School, Zyon Williams from\nthe Grace Christian Academy, Ma\u2019Hailiyah Roberts who represented the St.\nPeter\u2019s Academy, Unique Simon who represented the Sunnydale Primary School, Jonathan\nGomes of the TOR Memorial School and Arianna Goodluck from the Wesleyan Junior\nAcademy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerimiah: Devil is the Woods was read by: Melrona\nQuinn from the Foundation Mixed School, Sachin Jacobs from the Grace Christian\nAcademy, Anderson Small from the Sunnydale Primary School, Zion Samuel from the\nTOR Memorial School and Kevia Charles from the Wesleyan Junior Academy. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

After the first entertaining and intense round where,\nthe participants did their best to articulate the material before them, the\npool was narrowed down to the top five students who moved on to the 2nd<\/sup>\nRound of the competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top five students were: Anijah Carr and Melrona Quinn both of the Foundation Mixed School, Anderson Small from the Sunny Dale Primary School and Zyon Williams and Sachin Jacobs both from the Grace Christian Academy. <\/p>

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In round two, the students were judged on how\neffectively they could read while appropriately displaying the skills of a news\npresenter on audio-visual media, for example. Each finalist will read from a\nselected newspaper clipping and was seated at a desk, just as if he\/she was in\na studio reading the news.<\/p>

They were also given another portion of the book that\nthey read from in the first round to present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, it was Zyon Williams from the Grace\nChristian Academy who was the victor. Her counterpart, Sachin Jacobs was the 2nd<\/sup>\nplace winner while Melrona Quinn from the Foundation Mixed School placed third.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Williams was also judged as the Most Confident Reader\nand the Reader with the Best Eye Contact. She received among her prizes, a\nfully Loaded Desktop Computer compliments Rotary Club of Antigua, a Kindle\nTablet compliments Service Projects Director Kirk Francis, $300 from APUA, stationery\nfrom Rotary Club of Antigua, an Antigua Commercial Bank Junior Savings Account\nvalue $300, stationary from Paper Clips, stationery from Harpers and a gift\nCertificate value $150 from Happy Kids. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his prizes, Jacobs received a Kindle Tablet\ncompliments Service Projects Director Kirk Francis, stationery from Rotary Club\nof Antigua, stationary from Paper Clips, an Antigua Commercial Bank Junior\nSavings Account value $200, take Away Dinner for 2 compliments\nTucker-on-the-Grill with Nica and a gift Certificate value $150 from Happy Kids.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For her efforts, Quinn received a Kindle Tablet\ncompliments Service Projects Director Kirk Francis, stationery from Rotary Club\nof Antigua, stationary from Paper Clips, stationery from Harpers, an Antigua\nCommercial Bank Junior Savings Account value $200 and Take Away Dinner for 2\ncompliments Tucker-on-the-Grill with Nica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judges were collectively impressed with the level\nof competition and encouraged students who will enter the competition next year\nto familiarize themselves with the material for better results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President of the Rotary Club of Antigua, Adekunle\nOsoba explained that the exercise is part of the community-based organization\u2019s\nway of ensuring that focus is placed on improving literacy around the island.\nHe encouraged the students to view the opportunity not just as a competition\nbut also as a way to express themselves in a positive way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant Governor Dr. Sharon Cordiner also addressed the gathering of students, teachers, parents and<\/g> specially invited guests. She noted that the reading competition will give students the chance to showcase their literacy skills and added that the Rotary Club of Antigua is committed to playing a positive role in the development of the future leaders of this country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past President of the Rotary Club of Antigua, Ato\nKentish, was the Master of Ceremonies. The audience were not at all left out.\nSome students present did not go home empty handed as prizes compliments the\nAntigua Commercial Bank (ACB) were won by those who correctly answered trivia\nquestions during the periods in intermission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Vote of Thanks, a representative from the winning\nschool, Grace Christian Academy, expressed thanks to the Rotary Club of Antigua\nfor hosting yet another successful competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rotary Club of Antigua expressed thanks to all of the sponsors who made the event possible and did not hesitate to provide prizes for the students, namely: the Antigua Commercial Bank (ACB), Harpers, Paperclips, Tucker on the Grill with Nica, Inet, Bryden and Sons, Happy Kids and Service Project Director for the Rotary Club of Antigua, Kirk Francis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
