Members of the Heritage Quay\nMerchants Association recently met with tourism officials to gain factual\ninsight into the clauses of the Global Port Holdings (GPH) cruise port\nagreement.<\/p>

Minister of Tourism Charles Fernandez alongside Permanent Secretary Mr. Walter Christopher and the Acting Director General<\/g> of Tourism Mr. St. Clair Soleyn used the opportunity to allay concerns of displacement and loss of revenue as a result of the agreement based on misinformation being bandied about in sections of the local media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among concerns noted by the\napproximately 20 owners and representatives of duty-free stores at Heritage\nQuay, was the notion that ownership of the stores at Heritage Quay would be transferred\nto Global Ports because of the upgrades and construction of additional stores\nthat the company will undertake. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Minister Fernandez assured the\ngathering that GPH will NOT own the cruise ship complex or shops that will be\nerected but will LEASE the property for 30 years. During that period all rent\npayments by the store owners will be made to GPH.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A guarantee that GPH would be\nable to increase visitor arrivals was also sought by the merchants and it was\nnoted by PS Christopher that under the agreement a guarantee on head-tax for\n600,000 (six hundred thousand) passengers is held by the Government. Further to\nthis, success stories of GPH\u2019s port management can be found in their Malta and\nMontenegro operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Minister Fernandez, \u201cGPH\ncurrently manages cruise operations in Cuba which is one of the most\nsought-after ports of call in the Caribbean\u2026this in itself is a major advantage\nfor GPH when negotiating port calls to Antigua and Barbuda as the destination\ncan be paired with Cuba as a part of GPH\u2019s Caribbean offering.\u201d <\/p>

Other issues raised by the\nHeritage Quay Merchants Association were in relation to whether the status of\nDuty-Free shopping area will continue for the port under GPH control to which\nthe answer was yes. The status of Duty-Free port will also be conferred on the\nport at Falmouth Harbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Heritage Quay Merchants\nAssociation will be included in a series of stakeholder meetings to be held\nwith the principals of Global Port Holdings Ltd who will be on island next\nweek.<\/p>
