The Antigua and Barbuda<\/a> Meteorological Service has issued a high surf advisory affecting several islands across the eastern Caribbean. The warning, released at 3:25 pm on Monday, covers Antigua, Barbuda<\/a>, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities are warning that mainly northern and eastern coastlines will experience hazardous marine conditions, including swells of 1.5 to 2.4 metres (5\u20138 ft), with locally higher waves of up to 3.1 metres (10 ft). <\/p>

Breaking surfs over 1.8 metres (6 ft) may produce life-threatening rip currents. Swell periods are expected to range between 11 and 13 seconds.<\/p>

The advisory comes with a risk of coastal flooding, beach erosion, and disruptions to marine activities. Local officials have urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution.<\/p>

The timing of the advisory varies by location: the British Virgin Islands are expected to be affected until Tuesday evening; Anguilla until Tuesday afternoon; Barbuda until early Wednesday; and Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts, and Nevis until early Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potential impacts include strong rip currents that can be dangerous even for experienced swimmers, injuries to beachgoers, property damage, beach erosion, saltwater intrusion, and damage to coral reefs.<\/p>

The Meteorological Service advises people to avoid affected coastlines, particularly reefs and exposed beaches. Swimming should be restricted to lifeguard-supervised or sheltered areas, mainly on southern coasts. <\/p>
