Hurricane Erin has intensified into a Category 4 storm as it passes north of the Leeward Islands, bringing heavy rain and hazardous seas to the region.<\/p>

At 05:00 local time, the US National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 170 miles (275km) northeast of Anguilla, moving west-northwest at 20mph (31km\/h). Winds have strengthened to 120mph (195km\/h), with further intensification expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Met Service lifted the tropical storm watch for Anguilla, but alerts remain for St Martin, St Barthelemy and Sint Maarten. Forecasters warn of 2-4 inches of rain, with isolated totals of up to 6 inches, raising risks of flash floods and landslides.<\/p>

Hurricane-force winds extend 30 miles (45km) from Erin\u2019s centre, while tropical-storm winds reach 125 miles (205km). Swells are forecast to affect the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola this weekend, spreading to the Bahamas, Bermuda and the US east coast early next week.<\/p>
