AccuWeather\u00ae hurricane experts say a tropical rainstorm that has developed near the Cabo Verde Islands this weekend is forecast to intensify into the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season<\/strong><\/a> this week as it tracks westward.  <\/p>

AccuWeather\u00ae was the\u202ffirst\u202fsource\u202fto\u202fissue\u202fa\u202ftrack\u202fand intensity\u202fforecast Sunday\u202fafternoon. 


“Atmospheric conditions are conducive for tropical development in this region, including a lack of dust, warm water and a lack of disruptive breezes known as wind shear<\/strong><\/a>,” AccuWeather\u00ae Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill, explained. \u201cAt this time, the upper air pattern late week favors the storm turning north and likely staying east of the U.S. East Coast. There can also be an increase in rough surf and rip currents along the East Coast beaches next weekend into early the following week.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next name on the list in\u202fthe Atlantic basin is Erin. Outside of locally heavy rain and gusty wind across the Cabo Verde Islands into Monday, there are currently no other direct impacts to land expected at this time. 


Locally heavy rain will fall across the Cabo Verde Islands through Monday. General rain amounts will total 1-2 inches, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax\u2122 of 5 inches. This could lead to normally dry streams quickly filling with water and isolated flooding in low-lying areas. 


Wind gusts of 40-50 mph with an AccuWeather Local StormMax\u2122 of 60 mph can impact the islands through Monday. These winds could produce isolated power outages. 


Due to the rain and wind impacts, this rainstorm is a less than one on the AccuWeather RealImpact\u2122 Scale for Hurricanes in the Cabo Verde Islands.

Tropical risks ramping up this month<\/strong> 


AccuWeather\u00ae hurricane experts said last week that three to five named storms<\/strong><\/a> are expected to develop in the Atlantic basin this month.

No direct impacts to land are expected from the area at risk of tropical development from Aug. 12-13.  


AccuWeather\u00ae hurricane experts say the area at low risk of tropical development potential from Aug. 15-19, as it traverses westward across the Atlantic, will need to be monitored closely for potential impacts to the eastern Caribbean. <\/p>

There is a low risk of tropical rain and wind impacts across Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles and South Florida from Aug. 15-19 as the newly formed tropical rainstorm passes near the area. 


AccuWeather\u00ae hurricane experts say a low risk of impacts from the same rainstorm exists from northern Florida, northward along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and into Atlantic Canada from Aug. 19-24. 


There will also be a low risk for impacts across the eastern and northern Caribbean and South Florida from Aug. 20-24.\u202f 


AccuWeather\u00ae<\/strong> 2025 U.S. Atlantic Forecast<\/strong>  


AccuWeather\u00ae hurricane experts predict a dynamic and potentially volatile “above-average” Atlantic hurricane season this year, similar to last year\u2019s historic and destructive season.\u202f 


The 2025 Atlantic season so far has had four named storms, including Tropical Storm Dexter which formed in early August and tracked over the open waters of the Atlantic. 


The\u202fAccuWeather\u00ae 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast<\/strong><\/a>\u202fpredicts 13 to 18 named storms, including seven to 10 hurricanes and three to five major hurricanes that reach Category 3 strength or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. A Category 3 hurricane has sustained winds between 111 and 129 miles per hour.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
