Minister of Tourism the Charles Fernandez, along with Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Tourism and Investment, Mr. Walter Christopher yesterday (TUES) met with the bargaining agents and shop stewards, as well as select members of the board and staff of the St. John\u2019s Development Corporation (SJDC).<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

According to the President of the\nAntigua Trades and Labour Union Mr. Wigley George, there is a need for clarity\nregarding the agreement and the tentative transition process as well as job\nsecurity among the workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Fernandez echoing the sentiments\nof Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne during an official press conference\nlast Tuesday stated unequivocally that \u201call workers will be protected and there\nwill be NO RETRENCHMENT.\u201d <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Tourism Minister who has\nresponsibility for the SJDC noted during the meeting that his government was\nfully cognizant of the fact that the issue of job security would be of major\nconcern to the 200 plus workers employed at the Corporation, however, the\nprimary interest while negotiating the GPH deal has always been that of the\nworkers and stakeholders.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was not feasible to include\nUnions or the management of the SJDC in the early stages of the negotiations as\nthe process was dynamic, with parameters changing constantly\u201d, stated Minister\nFernandez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All parties achieved consensus on\nthe way forward being a thrust towards improving productivity and efficiency in\nall employee roles as the GPH deal presents opportunities for increased cruise\npassenger traffic as well as for transfers and promotions.<\/p>

Training is a major prerequisite\nrequested by the Government negotiating team and Global Ports is expected to\ninvest heavily in the edification of all employees to achieve the improved\nproduct levels necessary for the Antiguan and Barbudan cruise industry to\nflourish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a 120 days transition\nperiod prior to the full hand-over of the St. John\u2019s cruise facility exclusive\nof Heritage Hotel, Newport Holdings, Downtown Development and the Vendors Mall\nto Global Port Holding with a steering committee formulated to oversee the\ndeliverables during this time frame.<\/p>

The Hon. Tourism Minister assured\nthe Union Reps as well as SJDC staff and board members that Tuesday\u2019s\ndiscussion was not final and that any issue or issues which may arise will be\ndiscussed in future forums.<\/p>
