CABINET NOTES<\/strong>– The\u00a0Minister for Health, the Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph, informed the Cabinet that the\u00a0Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC<\/a><\/strong>)\u00a0is advancing its plans to significantly enhance healthcare services for individuals living with\u00a0Sickle Cell Disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of this initiative, a\u00a0dedicated treatment space\u00a0has been identified at the\u00a0Infectious Disease Centre (IDC), located on the site of the former Holberton Hospital. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This facility will offer\u00a0specialized care and support\u00a0tailored to the unique needs of sickle cell patients, representing a major expansion of SLBMC\u2019s <\/a><\/strong>healthcare services.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During a recent tour of the facility alongside members of the\u00a0Sickle Cell Association\u00a0and individuals affected by the disease, Minister Joseph reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He announced that the designated area will undergo further development to create a\u00a0fully equipped and patient-centered unit, and confirmed that\u00a0construction will begin immediately. <\/p>

The Minister underscored that the establishment of this unit is a\u00a0top priority\u00a0for the SLBMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To complement these clinical services, the Centre will also\u00a0launch a national registration drive\u00a0to identify and register all sickle cell patients across Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>

The goal is to build a\u00a0comprehensive national database\u00a0that will enhance long-term care, improve access to treatment, and support more effective planning and allocation of healthcare resources.<\/p>
