The Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, His Excellency, Sir Rodney\nWilliams, says he wants Antiguans and Barbudans to embrace the historic Government\nHouse as \u2018the People\u2019s House\u2019 where a sense of national pride and community\nspirit may be nurtured and encouraged.<\/p>

Sir Rodney made the call Thursday morning during activities marking\nWorld Monuments Fund (WMF) Watch Day celebrations held at Government House. The\noccasion also marked Government House\u2019s inclusion on the list of properties\nworldwide which WMF has earmarked as properties that should be preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the honour that has been bestowed on Government House, Sir\nRodney said, \u201cit underscores what many in Antigua and Barbuda have been sharing\nfor decades \u2013 that the Government House property has an important message for\npresent and future generations.\u201d<\/p>

He noted that the property, which served as the official residence of\nthe Head of State for many years, tells the story of struggles and triumphs of\nAntiguans and Barbudans, and it maps the path from enslavement to emancipation\nto independence.        <\/p>

Sir Rodney described Government House as a building from the 1700\u2019s that\nis full of history, which led to its selection as one of 25 heritage sites\nworldwide that made it to the prestigious World Monument Fund List, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to preserve this building so that present and future\ngenerations can understand the cultural and heritage value of the past. We need\nto preserve this building so that it can be utilized for educational purposes\nas a historic site as well as a tourist attraction,\u201d Sir Rodney stated.    <\/p>

Executive Director of World Monuments Fund, John Darlington, who also\nspoke at the launch, disclosed that WMF was founded in 1965 and that it is\ninvolved in 800 properties in over 100 countries. He said these include the\niconic temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Gardens of the Taj Mahal in\nIndia, the Rock Cave Churches of Ethiopia and the Moai Heads on the Easter\nIslands.       <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said joining this distinguished list was a \u2018very historic and\nimportant\u2019 achievement for both Government House and Antigua and Barbuda as a\nwhole. Additionally, he said Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s approach to preserving\nGovernment House which includes school children, local and overseas experts, as\nwell as a group of prisoners was commendable as it brought with it much social\nbenefit. \u201cIts not just about heritage, but how heritage helps a nation,\u201d he\ndeclared.<\/p>

Antigua and Barbuda\u2019s Cultural Envoy, Dr. Barbara Paca, spoke of the\nefforts being made to restore the gardens at Government House and the decision\nmade to ensure that there was a local understudy working alongside the experts\nfrom abroad. This is to ensure the transfer of knowledge and skills which are\nat the heart of the project.<\/p>
