In a newspaper of Friday, August 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0of 2024, I read the following, under the caption\u00a0Poor Support for Watchnight Gathering.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cDisappointed\u00a0with the attendance on Wednesday evening at the 16th<\/sup>\u00a0annual Watchnight Gathering\u00a0in observance of Emancipation Day<\/a><\/strong>, the Minister of Education, Sports and Creative Industries has agreed that something must be done to boost interest and attendance for the gathering\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The article continued:\u00a0\u201cOrganized by\u00a0the Antigua and Barbuda<\/a><\/strong> Reparations Commission, the Watchnight Gathering, held at the Botanical Gardens, was described as a continuous cherished tradition, symbolizing the anticipation enslaved Africans felt as they awaited news of their freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it continues to be overshadowed by the carnival festivities that are held simultaneously\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn Wednesday\u00a0evening\u201d, it continues,\u00a0\u201cMinister Daryll Matthew said that the turnout continues to be disappointing and told the gathering there must be renewed interest in the activities planned in observance of Emancipation Day\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Matthew is quoted as saying;\u00a0\u201c\u00a0MAYBE\u00a0AS THE MINISTER WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR FESTIVALS AND EVENTS LIKE THIS, MAYBE I NEED TO DO SOME REFLECTION TO SEE WHETHER OR NOT WE ARE DOING ENOUGH TO EMPOWER AND ENLIGHTEN PERSONS ABOUT THIS ACTIVITY\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>

Hallelujah!!<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What brilliant\u00a0reflection!!\u00a0Not\u00a0only has the minister programmed a major carnival show, as usual, for the same night as the Emancipation Watchnight, but this year it is the Caribbean Melting\u00a0Pot\u00a0<\/strong>night; and as brilliant stroke of genius reflection, we have the leading regional, if not\u00a0international, \u00a0soca\u00a0artist\u00a0Machel Montano<\/strong>, performing in that hot entertainment pot. Guess\u00a0where.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hundred yards or so away\u00a0from the Emancipation Watchnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0It will be Machel Montano versus Dr Julius Garvey, son of the leader of the greatest mobilization of black people ever on this planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Einstein must have been engaged for that decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0It\u2019s like having the Pied Piper performing at the Antigua <\/a><\/strong>Recreation Grounds, while expecting children to gather under the rubber tree at the Botanical Gardens to eat vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garvey could be saying a few words at the beginning of the night\u2019s program at the ARG, to the melting pot of Caribbean people, as his father would have done.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approaching midnight, there could be some relevant artistic performance, then at midnight, the minute of silence, the drumming\/iron band and perhaps some fireworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.<\/p>\n
