June 1 is the date set for the opening of the Criminal\nProsecutions Service in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

Minister of Legal Affairs, Attorney General the Hon.\nSteadroy Cutie Benjamin said that the Director of Public Prosecution is working\nalong with members of the Police Force, Immigration Department and Labor to establish\nthe Criminal Prosecutions Service by the second quarter of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin added that already, the staff complement within the\nDPP office has increased. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This, he mentioned will further ensure that manpower is in\nplace, to make certain that justice is adequately delivered so that innocent\npersons will not be brought before the court.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Attorney General explained the process. \u201cThe file will\nbe brought to Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, he and his team\nwill examine the file to discover first of all whether there is sufficient\nevidence upon which to lay a charge, in that case before charges are laid they\nmust be satisfied that there is sufficiency meaning there is a responsible\nprospect of success in prosecuting the case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister of Legal Affairs continued that persons will not be\ncharged on suspicion, but will be charged and brought to court if there is\nevidence upon which a jury or Magistrate can act upon to make a decision. <\/p>

Police Prosecutors will be brought under the umbrella of the\nOffice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.<\/p>\n
